Annual Meeting Highlights

A special thank you to all the Friends who attended the Annual Meeting on Sunday, October 21st, and a big thanks to the Columbia City Branch for hosting us! Highlights included:

Friends Board President Steve Griggs enlightening us about the term “Tsundoku,” which refers to stacks of unread books. (I’m sure none of us can relate!)

Guest speaker David Brewster shared about his experience as an “importer of good ideas from other cities,” and specifically talked about Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum. This idea came out of 1730’s Philadelphia and Ben Franklin’s idea to pool folks’ personal libraries. The idea for public libraries grew out of this, according to Brewster.

Our City Librarian, Marcellus Turner, spoke with gratitude about how The Friends grants “go a long way” to helping SPL do what it needs to do. This year, The Friends are replacing a globe at the Central Branch that has been worn through usage.

Finally, The Friends recognized some significant people. Congrats to Mark Desmond, the Friend of the Year! And much appreciation and gratitude to our Treasurer for the last long while, Lori Cleaves. We will miss working with you so closely!
