A commitment to serve on the Friends’ Board carries with it certain expectations, both formal and informal. As an all volunteer board, we are committed to making Board service rewarding and enjoyable and to help board members exercise their special skills and talents.

Advocacy and Community Education (ACE) – Carmen Bendixen, Chair
Meets 7 p.m. – 9 p.m., 1st Monday of each month
- Educates the public and elected officials on issues of vital concern to the Library
- Speaks on behalf of community for adequate funding levels for the Library
- Engages in short- and long-term planning connecting neighborhoods to the Library
Board Development – Connie Templeton, Chair
Meets according to members’ schedules
- Develops programs and materials to maintain and improve the effectiveness of the Board. Facilitates external professional development
- Recruits, interviews and nominates new Board candidates
- Acting point-of-contact for volunteer coordination
Communications – Dave Gelfand, Chair
Meets 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m., 3rd Wednesday of each month
- Develops and executes plan for how the Friends can communicate more consistently and visibly with the numerous and diverse segments of the people of Seattle
- Coordinates with Advocacy to develop and manage initiatives, outreach events with Seattle branch libraries, and in-depth communication with Seattle's diverse ethnic and cultural communities
- Engages with print and electronic media to reach public with Friends messaging
Operations – Sarah Kohut, Chair
Meets 4:30 – 6:30 p.m., 3rd Monday of each month
- Oversees the financial activities of the Friends to include two money-raising areas: the Book Sales and the FriendShop
- Makes recommendations to the Board on how funds raised by the Friends should be expended on behalf of the Library
- Develops organizational policies and makes recommendations to the Board for resolving issues with operations
